My washing machine just crapped out on me a few days ago, and my husband and I are going tomorrow to shop for a new one. We had our dryer replaced last year right around this time and it was a gas dryer, so we had our gas company shut off the valve, and we switched to an all electric dryer. My husband has not yet pulled the washer out from the wall, but I'm just wondering if there are washers that use natural gas to heat the hot water, or if they are all electric?

The washer uses water from your water heater unit. It doesn't care how the water is heated. The washer doesn't heat the water. As in a dryer, the heat is produced either by gas or electricity. A washer gets the water, both hot and cold from an outside source.

It is the dryer, that can be gas or electric. The cost of operation will depend on where you live. In some areas, gas is more economical, in others electric. If your residence is set for one or the other, there can be expense in conversion. Gas requires the gas line and electric requires sufficient power to run the dryer safely.
