Ok, I'm wondering....after you had children, did your periods get heavier, the cramping more severe? I had my second child nearly five years ago, and I noticed that my periods got much heavier, they last longer, and the cramping is more severe. I'm wondering if anyone else is experiencing the same? Also, aside from Motrin, heating pads, and such, what are the ways you cope with the cramping? I find myself skipping work and activities that I enjoy at times because it's so severe. My doctor says that it's ok, that we don't want to even think about a hysterectomy at this point, that I'm clear of cysts and other ailments, but it's making me miserable. Suggestions?

For many women, right after childbirth and maybe some years after, periods did get heavier or cramping did get more or less severe.
Mine is similar to yours but I found something that works well and is all natural. I wished they had this available when I was a kid and had those severe out of this world pain cramps. I was put on the pill at 14 to stop the pain because it always felt like I was having an appendix bursting.
The cramps after both my children were not as bad as they were but they were bad none the less. Sorry, started rambling.
I found the use of a natural progesterone creme worked the best. Go to a natural health store (not GNC) and see if you can find it. It is not cheap but it will last about 3 to 4 months. Read up on progesterone and estrogen imbalances. Ever since I started using it I have had little or no cramping and my periods are not as long or heavy (maybe for about 2 days heavy). I am 38 yrs old and have been using it for the past 3 yrs. I can't remember the name I use but if I can I will email it to you or repost here.
Hope things do get straightened out. I really can sympathize with you.

Before I had children, it was miserable like it currently is which I describe later. After I had both of my children I was cramp free and had the lightest most wonderful 3 day periods ever. Could get away with panty liners almost all the way through. Ok, now that you hate me, about 10 years after my second(almost 7 years ago), they have gradually gotten heavier, longer, and are accompanied by cramps. For the last 2 almost 3 years it has gotten extremely uncomfortable and inconvenient. It lasts a minimum 7 days, the flow is the heaviest ever(use a overnight pad and super tampon) with sanitation changes every hour, and cramps are worse than both labors. It's debilitating most months at least 2-3 days. I go nowhere except work and back home for the duration for fear of leaking which has happened several times. A few months ago I bled for 30 days straight. I'm tracking things so when I go in for my annual appt. in the next few months I will have backing for a hysterectomy. I'm almost 40 and don't want to give birth to anymore children. I've been on the pill for years and it's not helping anymore.

Try the seasonal pill that makes you have only 4 periods a year or get the depo shot. Everyone I know on depo hasn't had a period after 3 months. There's also a new pill that you take year round and have no period.

Yes, my periods got heavier. Then I had a tubaligation, they got even heavier. I had a partial hysterectomy this past June. My doctor did the surgery vaginally. Pain and recovery were minimal. There is also a procedure called NovaSure. Go to www.novasure.com to find out more information on the procedure. It's suppose to reduce menstrual cycles, and in some cases the procedure has caused women to stop bleeding. It's a very short procedure with almost no recovery time. If you do not want to have any procedures done, then I would visit with your doctor about xanaflex. It's xanax (nerve relaxant) and flexiril (muscle relaxor) combined. Good Luck!!

I don't have a heavier period (mine has actually gotten a bit lighter, but it's always been heavy anyway), but the cramps have really gotten bad since I had children. I usually can't get out of work for cramps, so I have found that hopping into a warm bath with a bit of lavender really calms and soothes the pain. I also (this may be TMI) try to play with some "toys" during this time...orgasms help with the cramps...

I had the same happen to me. My periods never gave me trouble before I gave birth - then they did. I got horrible PMS mood swings, cramping, heavier periods, etc. Well after 10 years I've had enough. I'm tired of taking time off to deal with it. I've been put on Yaz birth control because the doctor thinks I have PMDD. I've only been on it a month, so I can't tell you if its working yet. I've had breakthrough bleeding for the last week, so I hope it kicks in soon.

Honestly as much as you don't feel like it, the best prescription for cramping is light exercise..like walking.

One thing I'd look into is your diet. I know that sounds strange. I've had 2 kids, and yes, my periods got a lot heavier, cramping did get worse, and as I got older (into late 30s) PMS got worse too. Up until that time I was eating a typical American diet, with a bunch of processed foods and plenty of sugar.

When I cut out refined (processed) sugar and went to eating whole, freshly prepared foods, I started to feel a lot better. I even added a little exercise, and that helped even more.

Don't know if this is anything like your situation, but if the doctors are telling you there's nothing wrong, I'd consider it.
