The Artemis Fowl books by Eoin Colfer
Harry Potter books
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series by Douglas Adams
My other favorites are anything by Jane Austen, Jane Erye by Charlotte Bronte and pretty much anything by P.G. Wodehouse. (Might be a little girly or old fashioned for your tastes.)

I'd suggest you just go to the library and start browsing by the type of book you like to read. Read the flyleaves or back of the books and see what trips your trigger.
