"you cannot compare a team of the past with a team of the present"
One of the Dolphins offensive linemen weighed 240 pounds. How does that compare? Can weight be compared across different eras?

Patriots adding another game with Bills, Delfines and Jets = 40-58 .408 - Still better than the 72 delfines.

The Patriots is much tougher, they are playing most of the top teams like Colts, Steelers Dallas, Chargers and Giants.
The 72 Dolphins played only 2 teams with winning records in the 14 game season and both ewere only 8-6.

Can't really compare.
In 72 the use of steroids and sports inhencing drugs were very legal. So if the 72 team were to play today the entire team were be sitting on the beach. Yes the teams they played were stronger ect. Can one say steriods.
Miami season consisted of 14 games not the 16 games of today.
I guess with the changes in the rules and the added two games, Miami thought their record would nver be broken.

Pats still have a tougher schedule, but no sane person could argue that it is much harder to go undefeated in the 'parity' era (and 16 game schedule) than it was in the 70s.
The NFL is designed to allow bottom dwellers to rise quickly and not allow any team to stay at the top for too long. The Pats and Colts are the only exceptions this decade.
There's more skilled players, more teams, more travel, more coaches, more everything than there was 35 years ago. It's much tougher today.

I think it is way too hard to compare two different eras. The game, the officiating, the training, the athleticism...basically everything has changed.
Why can't we just acknowledge that the fins were the best of their time and maybe the Pats of right now...and stop comparing apples and oranges.
And for the 475394th time I've said this:
The season isn't over yet and upsets happen.

I hate the pats and the 72 dolphins.
i think i heard that they didnt play ONE team with a winning record that year plus it was only a 14 game season, the thing i hate about the pats this year (even though its not their fault) is the division they play in, that is pathetic, two of the worst teams in the NFL plus one average team. they do have to play, dallas, Indy, Pittsburgh, and NY G so that kinda makes up for it.

gawd, that is an apples to bananas comparison.
The patriots still have half their div schedule left, that opponent win pct will drop like an anchor with a brick tied to it thrown off a tall building. When they add another game with each of thier div brothers.
To Answer question, The 72 Dolphins had better competition, 07 Pats have only played 2 games where they ever had a sniff of losing

Patriots.
Not only is their schedule harder...they have more games. They also live in an era where it is hard to keep a core of players together with the salary cap. With the parody in the NFL, they've managed to assemble a dominating team.

these two teams are incomparable. i dont see why people cant realize that. you cannot compare a team of the past with a team of the present. there are many things that were/were not done in the 70's that are/are not done today, and visa versa.
try as you might, but this is something you will never ever get an answer to. we will never ever know which team is better unless they were to actually play each other...which is impossible.

Now that you mention it, maybe there should be a astrisk next to the dolfines record. 36%? That's pretty pitiful.
The Pats are making the 72 dolfones irrelevant.
