Motivation comes from a persons aspirations and how they perceive their current activity to be either helping or hurting them get to their goals. Beyond aspirations, the classic motivations of greed, revenge, proving oneself to be a good person to ease lack of confidence, guilt and other driving forces may reveal the motivation for a specific course of action. To some who are comfortable with themselves and life may simply be motivated to enjoy life. So you basically are dealing with the activity involved, a persons life situation or stated goals, and some extensive background knowledge of a persons life situation and history to begin to form ideas as to the motivation behind activities.
