Motivation is the study of what people do to improve their state of mind. What make people "tick" in order to stay sane, fulfill impulses, needs, and ego wants. Most actions stem from decisions to protect their peace of mind. When things go wrong, they become motivated to make decisions that will either correct the error, or to hide the error thereby creating more error.

Motivation is not the study of anything. Motivation is a psychological quality which impells one to perform an action. This quality may be considered a "reason" for doing the action, such as "fulfillment of basic needs", "desire for intimacy", etc.
