yes its worth fixing because it is an 01 model and that's not a lot of miles for an 01 to have on it,id have it repaired as long as they could stay in the 1500 dollar range on the repair other wise it may wind up costing a lot more,so id tell them if it can be done for that to fix it,those are good vehicles so its worth repairing, you cant buy a good vehicle for what the repair will cost, that will barely make a down payment on one, good luck with it.

Ooh. If it's only a head gasket, which is my first guess, then it's probably worth fixing. Still far less than a replacement vehicle of the same value. It's labor intensive. Shop around, you may find a much better price.
If the engine is damaged it's probably not worth fixing. You're looking at $1000 or more in labor to swap out or repair the engine. I don't know for sure but I'm guessing a replacement remanufactured engine will be about $2400. A used engine is a possibility.
Compare the repair costs to the book value.

The mileage should be fine ;) A decent engine should be able to do 200,000 miles. A friend of mine has a collegue that requested a new company car because his had just hit 400,000 km (errm that's about 250,000 miles). But that one had a diesel engine, those are more robust. The company gave the car to a new worker btw :p It is still running. If you give your Ford Explorer good maintainance I think it'll be able to see 2013 ;) good luck

Only you can answer this question. How much do you want to spend on the vehicle? Don't worry about what the vehicle's value is; you'll never get the full value if you sell it or trade it in. You just have to decide if you want to spend $1500 on a car you (probably) own outright, or do you want to buy a new one and make payments.
Check your budget and then decide what fits that budget best.

If you can indeed get it fixed for $1500, it may be worth doing; a cracked block usually means a new engine, which will cost considerably more than that -- and almost certainly more than the vehicle is worth. Which should not dissuade you from doing it, if the vehicle is otherwise satisfactory and replacing it would cost more.

How was this determined. Was a compression test made ? Do you have coolant in the oil ? Is the engine running rough or mis firing ? I think you better get anoyher opinion. I think you are set up for a rip off. I don't know where you are but try this link.

for that price i would replace the motor with a complete rebuild...then you would have a $5000 car with a new motor.
you only spent $1,500 on..
you can get a long block 302 for under $1,200
this could be what your mechanic has in mind
wow that motor should have went 250,000 or more..
hope you have learned a lesson about checking the fluids
