They need not be on the same team, but bonus points if they are!

For me, I would look at Ozzie Smith at shortsop for his glove and Ed Delahanty for his bat.

(I assume we all know Ozzie. Delahanty played back at the beginning of the 1900s with Philadelphia. He died of mysterious causes on a train trestle in the middle of the season way back when. He has the third highest batting average in the HoF.)

Delahanty was primarily an outfielder. He played over 1300 games in the outfield, almost 300 at first, and 131 at second. Why in the world would you pick him for second base for the all-time combo?
Anyway, if it's just for defense, it would be Ozzie Smith and Bill Mazeroski.
If it's great players who were also great at defense, I always rely on Honus Wagner and Eddie Collins.

I would have to look at this shearly for defense. I would go with Omar Vizquel, his glove is amazing and his hands are the quickest I have ever seen...he will be turning Dp's with his old teammate Robbie Alomar, he was by far the best 2B I have ever seen, he did things defensively that made everyone marvel...he was a deplorable human to most for spitting in the face of an ump but still an amazing player.

Ozzie Smith and Roberto Alomar - hands down.

btw - Lefty O'Doul has the 3rd highest batting average of Hall of Fame players, Delahanty is 4th.

EDIT: I stand corrected - O'Doul isn't in the Hall.

I find this odd though: He isn't mentioned anywhere here:

That's too hard of a question, but I remember Trammell/Whitaker being very consistent in the 80s. My dad was a big Tigers fan so, of course, I got to constantly hear how great they were. LOL!

Being a Dodgers fan I would have to say Pee Wee Reese to Junior Gilliam. If nothing else they have the two best nicknames.

The Wizard of OZ would be my guy at short but I would have to go different at 2nd base. maybe Ryne Sandberg or Roberto Alomar.
