The advancement of knowledge within, tends to make us question what we are told. As an example, I talk with people who will tell me how unfairly they were treated, etc. Early in life I took those statements at face value. As I have learned, and became a lawyer I quickly that people edit events. So, when I here a story I have doubt that I have heard the whole story. So, being a cynic is the result of a lifetime of learning that what is told as truth, is often just a half truth. With age should come wisdom, and sadly, with wisdom comes cynicism.

Because what is usually considered "knowledge" is very one sided. If I told you that to know someone you had to love them, that would be knowledge . . . of the most intimate and important kind . . . but since it is not something you can add or wrote down or define explicitly, the linear-left-brained people who define what "knowledge" is would dismiss it as woolly minded nonsense.
The modern definition of knowledge tends to take a human being and reduce it to a mass of complexes and drives while ignoring any goodness that comes out of it. Frankly there is less room for cynicism now that at any time in out past, but people tend to look at only the negative aspects. Keep in mind that to ask such a question, you generally have to be literate, well-fed, educated, and probably have a computer to type on. You are the recipient of untold acts of kindness that go unnoticed and a miracle at the centre of your being.
It's essentially a problem of a world view . . . anything that disagrees with a certain mindset or world view is discarded as irrelevant. They essentially prove to you what you already believe. In essence, if you believe that Why is it that cynicism is directly proportional to knowledge, then it will be. If you don't, it won't be.

I don't think I agree with that statement. I would much rather it read cynacism is directly proportional to wisdom. Wisdom is knowledge plus practical experience. It makes one less idealistic and more realistic. Often being realistic leads to cynicism.

I wish I knew...I have been called a cynic many a time. But I don't claim to know anything, really. I know just enough to know that I know...nothing. Yes, Socratic, but truth.

well the more you know, the more you realise how much evil and badness there is in the world, and how much people lie and keep secrets
