Yes that's completely normal...some babies poop 10 times a day and some only poop every few days. my 5wk old usually poops anywhere from 1-3 times a day. There have been a couple of days when he hasn't pooped at all and he's fine, he's gained almost 3lbs since birth (so he definatley gets enough food) and he's comfortable. If your child hasn't pooped in a few days and seems moody and uncomfortable you should call the doctor.

First off, I'd say stop the prune juice. A baby this young really should have nothing but breastmilk or formula. An exclusively breastfed baby DOES NOT get constipated. Breastmilk is a natural laxative. If a baby is constipated, they have dry, hard, formed stools when they do go. It is NORMAL for many breastfed babies to begin skipping days and not having a BM ever day around this age. This is because with breastmilk, there is very little waste! They are able to absorb and use most of the nutrients in it! Starting around this age, some breastfed babies may only poop once a week. NORMAL, as long as it isn't hard and formed. (But look out, as it'll probably be a complete diaper blow out when she does go!)

My daughter was born 9/11 and she was going through the same thing. I knew she was very gassy and rather constipated. I gave her Mylicon drops (no help) stopped breastfeeding for a week to see if she would be less gassy (no help) and she actually went 4 days w/o a bowel movement at 2wks of age. She went to her pediatrician and was told that she was fine having 1 bowel movement a day, if not at all. He suggested Karo Syrup which would help her to have a bowel movement (large amounts of poop, too).

A home visit nurse from the hospital came in my daughter's second week (she's in her seventh now) and said that one a day is fine. I said that I thoguht as much because that's what is recommended for a healthy adult. As it is, if I go a day without a bowel movement (which might be once a week), I look over what I did and didn't eat the previous day and try and remedy it that day.

My son was in the Neonatal Intesive Care Unit, had some of the best doctors, and upon discharge they told me 1 bowel movement every three days is the minimum. He does well with that.
