I live in a dorm room and it gets really dusty really fast. I just got a new goldfish and I have an open top aquarium for him, but recently I saw some of the dust floating through his water. I change his water regularly, but I'm afraid it's still not enough! What should I do?

Hi Kathleen, The essential items for every fish keeper are a filter, a master test kit for your parameters & a fitted lid.

A fitted lid not only minimises dust & other foreign objects getting into your tank but more importantly will ensure he's safeguarded against jumping out which is a very real danger. Most sizes of tank have specific lids, many of which contain recesses for filtration tubes etc as well as for fixtures for lighting although lights are not essential. If you cannot get a lid for your tank then get a perspex sheet cut to size from a local DIY outlet & make sure you take into account recesses for all filttration & airlines. Further-you might have them drill some small air holes in it-perhaps in a neat stylised fish pattern? This lid should fit snugly just inside & rest on the two longitudinal lid runners.

As long as the dust is a normal dust I don't know why. For the rivers and oceans are having dust get in the waters and settling on the bottoms. Even gets slime down there.

Vacuum! Or get an air filter. Or cover most of the tank.
