You need to back up and start with training. Go to class and get the skills necessary to nail an audition before you walk in bright eyed and naive.

Once you've had some training, try looking at local auditions for theatre. Get a few credits on your resume then work your way into student and indie films. Use backstage.com and actorsaccess.com

Once you've done those things you will hopefully have been smart enough to have been networking with your teachers and fellow actors and anyone else you meet so you can get some industry referals to legit agents who don't charge fees up front or try to get you to go to specific classes or photographers.

Check out SAG.org and AFTRA.org, they have info for new actors as well. I don't recommend joining a union until you get a role that requires it. It's expensive and until you're experienced I doubt you would be offered a union role anyhow.

good luck,
Marianne

So many people think that the steps are:
1. Deciding you want to become an actor
and
2. Get an agent and start auditioning.

NO!

Between steps one and two there is training, understanding what you are getting yourself into and then you can think about getting an agent. Why would you even try to go and get an agent or audition when you're not ready yet?

First start to understand what you will have to do once you really commit to what you now say you want to do. Here's a little taste: http://www.actingcareerstartup.com/working_as_an_actor.html And that's just for starters TRYING to get work AFTER having had some training.

Second, get yourself into a good training program. If you need some help choosing, just have a look at the menu on the site I sent you to above and you will find information about how to choose a school based on certain criteria.

Thirdly, have a look at some of these 17 things you could start to do when you're ready: http://www.actingcareerstartup.com/how_to_become_an_actor.html

Don't get ahead of yourself. Marianne and TheatreDoc are right. Don't put the cart before the horse. If you just want to throw yourself in it and see what happens, then go for it, but don't spend too much time and money on it, because statistics say that you won't go ver far. If on the other hand you really FEEL that this is what you must do, then listen to us and build your base first. That will set you up for long-term success.

Good luck!

Tony

Right! You are getting ahead of yourself. First be in all the theatre stuff at school. Get your parents to help you and take an acting class. Then start getting into community theatre plays and take more classes. Have your parents help you create an actors's resume and get a professional head shot and then have your parents try to get an agent.
