Well....let's see. I might be trying to climb an up-hill battle with this one, but I will do my best to make my point clear, and argue my side.
I will have to say that Final Fantasy X is my favorite, but before everyone that has answered this before me and said that VII is the best wants to burn me at the stake....Let me explain why.
Final Fantasy X has everything that VII did. The epic story (with a better back story than VII), the amazing soundtrack (To Zanarkand HAS to be regarded as one of the best pieces to be put into a FF game), and with it being the first on PS2 it had three dimensional graphics with Hollywood quality voice-overs (two firsts for the entire franchise, and pulled of remarkably well).
The catch 22 here is Sephiroth. I will agree that the addition of Sephiroth to the game was in fact genus, and he has developed his very own cult-like following. However, as interesting as the story may have been for VII, in watching the falling of a hero (in Sephiroth) and then his rebellion following, I still find that everything that happened in X was more compelling and compassionate.
The story of X just had the right events, at the right times, to PULL you into the game, and MAKE you want to dive deeper into a story that at times you may not have wanted to end. With the icing on the cake being that the enemy that has plagued the world that you find yourself in has been your Father. I Loved the way the game gave great backstory to the relationship between Tidus and Jecht as well.
I will mention that X is the ONLY game in the entire series to spawn a DIRECT sequel (although it was done very poorly). With Final Fantasy games being made to be played for hundreds of hours, only to have a story so compelling and so epic that it couldnt be told in just one game, they had to make a sequel just to complete the captivating love story between Tidus and Yuna.
This is why Final Fantasy X gets the nod from me as being the best of the series.
As far as favorite charicter of all time...I'm gonna come out of left field with this one and say it was General Leo from Final Fantasy VI. You only had the oppritunity to play as him once in the game, right before the first chapter ends. When using him you must battle alone, using only him, and he tragicly ends up being another casuality of war in your hands. I say he's my favorite because the one and only time that I got to use him, he was such an interesting character in battle that I only had the chance to experence once, and when it was over I wanted to get the chance again.
A similar event happens with Sephiroth (when you are going through Cloud's memorys and his story in Nibelheim) and you get the chance to play as him as well, but I think thats what made him such an interesting VILLIAN not so much good guy.
So all in all my favorite good guy has to be General Leo from FF VI and favorite villian Sephiroth from FFVII.
Hope I didn't ramble too long, great question BTW.

These fools have no idea what they're talking about. FF7 was almost decent, but it had enormous plot holes and outside of battles you're basically playing as a Legoman. FF6 on the other hand is artfully drawn and has an engrossing story line, good characters, and an excellent leveling/battle system.

P.S. I don't have to type in all caps to be a fanatic....plus I'm not a 3 year old.

VII is the best, but VIII is actually my favorite. I think VIII got a bad rap, because it followed VII. The story was just as engrossing as VII, the charcters were just as beautifully developed as VII, but the musical score I think is much better in VIII than VII.
I really felt entranced by the story in VIII, moreso than VII. I think the story of Squall is a little more against the grain, as compared to Cloud. The biggest trump card VII has is Sephiroth, imo. Sephiroth is the most interesting and, well, awesome, villain quite possibly EVER in video game history.
But, given a choice whilst on a deserted island, I would take VIII over VII. Just an amazing game that doesn't get as much cred as VII or III (aka VI, depending on nation of origin.) But, it's just as great, some ways moreso, that VII and III, but not as loved and adored.

Like others my favorite was FF VII (Which was also the first PS game i got).
Not only did it have the best characters and most creative story but for its time it had unbelievable graphics (being the first FF in 3D)
But to say which is my fav characters is tough as cloud was cool, but in my eyes it was between Cloud and Sephiroth, with maybe Cloud just winning (the awesome hair won it).
