I'm so glad to hear you are trying to stay away from the princess crap. I hate people pushing that on their daughters before the girl is old enough to know what kind of girl she wants to be (I'm also not thrilled with parents pushing sports on boys as toddlers either). Go with something simple as birthday #1. More than likely, you are going to have your daughter, and mostly grown ups yes? So cake, ice cream, and sandwiches/pizza. Keep the party short or she'll be tired and cranky and overstimulated. If you want to decorate, go to party city and get something more generic than a cartoon character...like butterflies or ladybugs or just "Happy Birthday" stuff. Its a lot cheaper than the ones with licensed characters, and its better to avoid pushing commercialism on your kids...soon enough they are going to insist on everything having elmo or dora or whatever on it.

Instead of haveing a party why not make a special trip to somewhere special and intruiging for baby, she wont really remeber it so instead of getting all stresseded out over a party and cake and invites. Invite a few ,family members to a park, or beach, somewhere where everyone can relax and have fun. I took my son to see the sunrise over the ocean, and fill his diaper up with sand. Make it memorable for mom and dad, not baby. You can always have the friends and other relatives come visit later, with gifts.

At one, the baby is going to have no idea what is going on. I suggest instead that you plan the party around all the people who helped you make it through the first year. Celebrate your success as a mother and honor those who helped.

It's more a party for you than it is for her...
To her, everything is New and Special. It's not like she's going to remark 'oh princess party... that is sooo last century'.

I would celebrate it but I would bother more about the child getting not too upset by scary things (that the parents find fantastic) than I would try to give her an 'unforgettable experience'.

My son and his wife have celebrated my grand babies birthdays by renting out a space at their local Community Centre swimming pool. They bring only the cake and ice cream and the guests treat bags. All seem to have a great time, and the mess is minimal. The $$ that would be spent on all the paper plates, and decorations is spent on the rental. Check with your local Community Centre to see what they offer.
Have fun!

Make it simple. A one year old will not really know what all is going on. Have fun finger food for the little ones and the adults plus cake and ice cream. For my daughter we did one of her favorite Disney cartoon characters as a theme.

I wouldn't waste your money on a bunch of expensive paper plates and stuff just because they have characters on them. We did a ladybug theme for my daughter. She had a ladybug cake, red and black streamers, ladybug stickers, and a red tablecloth with black plates for the "spots" It was cute, and inexpensive.
Here's the cake.

If she's into Dora, Hello Kitty, The Backyardigans or any of those toons, you should do it w/that theme in mind. Whatever gets her excited when she sees it on tv.
