Okay so we hooked up my new washer last night and when I reached in the basin to get the wet clothes out of it I got shocked... Someone at my work said something about grounding out the washer. she said newer washers need to be grounded to avoid electric shock... I'm completely lost can someone please tell me what to look for?

Something is wrong with your ground. I assume you have a three prong plug on your washer electrical cord so something must be wrong with the receptacle that its plugged into. Buy a receptacle tester (see link) you can get them at any hardware store. Lowes sells them for $8. You may have an 'open ground'. Using the tester is the easiest way to find out if you do.
