Look at the Battle of Belleau Wood. It's where the United States Marines earned their nickname "Devil Dogs".
When the first American forces reached the front lines in WWI they met a force marching towards them. The officer in charcge told the Americans they should turn back as eveyone was retreating.
The American officer responded "Retreat, Hell! We just got here!"
