There are 25 1x1 rectangles. but then you would have to count all the 1x2, 2x1, 2x2, 1x3,.......etc.

Sorry, I don't have an answer off the top of my head. But the problem is a lot harder than the early posters think it is, especially since rectangles of the same size can overlap.

If this is a high school homework problem, I'm guessing your teacher doesn't expect anyone to find them all. I bet the plan is to have an interesting discussion next class about how many rectangles people found and how they went about finding them. (Often problems like this are posed to make the point that people working as a group can be more successful than when working as individuals.)

On the other hand, if this is a college assignment, you're probably supposed to get it right! ;)
