Would it be ok to put 5 Tinfoils in a 55 gallon tank until spring when I get a 90 gallon? These would actually be Red Tailed Tinfoils (Barbonymus Altus) not the true Tinfoil. They max out at 8 inches rather then 14. The ones I would like are about 4 inches right now.

There would be nothing else in the tank.

Yes, I do mean March/April. I will get enough filtration to transfer over to my 90. I have another 55 right now with 550 GPH I will try to more then double that for the 90.

Should be nothing wrong with that. The size of your fish, in a 55 gallon tank will have ample space to move around and thrive. We are in November now, so I figure you're talking about spring time in terms of March/Aprilish. 4-5 months in this tank, assuming they have some sort of accelerated growth as a worst case scenario, they are still going to have room to free swim. Their activities are higher then other fish, but if they are the only fish in there, I don't see where this is going to be a problem.

I'd use a little higher then normal filtration however. I've had tinfoil barbs long ago and they seem to consume food in the same manner as a goldfish or oscar, thus a higher waste producing fish. If you are to consider future tank mates, you'll need to gear those tank mates around the higher activity level as well to cope with the possible stress.

Yes it's fine, but only if you are absolutely sure you are getting the 90 gallon tank. Keep in mind though that even the red tails grow past 10 inches if allowed , and a 90 gallon is too small for a permanent home - I know, I tried it, and your 90 gallon will seem tiny with them in it.

You would be pushing it because these are some of the most active fish around. They are constantly darting, and their relatively large size can cause them to dart farther than their tank might allow, leading to injury. If you are very careful about decorating their tank, you should be okay, but you may even see trouble in the 90 gallon tank as they mature... Contact me if you have any questions.

if it is just untill spring then i would be OK...not great.
keep in mind that plans can change, what if by spring you need the money for something else and your 5 now 8'' fish are still in a 55 and are SOL?
i wouldn't do it. i would just wait untill you get the larger tank to get the barbs.

if you already have them then i guess you'll have to keep them there or get the tank sooner.
