I've used a shop vac to get out most of the wetness, but now it is still damp and I think it's starting to get that still moist/ mildewy smell. It there some sort of powder or something I can put down to soak up the water and possibly get rid of the oder?

My washer was on a tile surface in my bathroom and when it flooded it went over the bathroom floor and also into my bedroom so it's not a removable carpet.

you need to get it dried, the pad also is wet and together will stay that way and start to smell. a shopvac is good but you can also put down towels and walk on them to squish out more water and get alot of fans in there to start drying that carpet out, you can also rent big ones from home improvement stores.

Sop up all the excess with towels. Then throw those in the bathtub/shower for now so they don't drip water everywhere else. Next, after all the mess is cleaned up, pull up the affected area of carpet and tear out the wet pad. Get a huge fan and prop it under the wet carpet area so that the air gets it and dries it from underneath. Depending on the saturation level, you may need to run it for a couple of days. Then grab some cheap pad at the flea market and cut to fit that shape, tuck it in there, and tack the carpet back down. ONLY after it is thoroughly dry.

Why do you have carpet under your washing machine anyway? They usually put a washing machine and dryer in a separate room with tile underneath. There are various deoderizers in the food stoor. A shop vac will get up the water but will not wash the rug. Stop and Shop rents steam cleaners that will actually wash the floor or hire one of those services for $50 that comes in and washes the carpet. That combined with a strong deoderizer (powder) will get the smell out and clean the carpet.

Get some towels and start blotting the area getting out as much water as possible.. If you have a dehumidifer use it.. Also, run some fans to circulate some air in the basement.. Although, if it smells you might want to tear out the carpet it may be too late... .Or get the carpet professionally cleaned OR have SERVEPRO come in they have a product that inhibits bacteria/mold and mildew growth but, does NOT bleach.. Good luck

Get some towels to soak up more water. Make sure you stomp on them.

Then get a fan/blow drier to dry the left over water.

After the carpet is dry, place some baking soda (to eradicate the odor) and smelling powder (potpourri) to mask it immediately on the carpet. After that, vacuum.

Oh yah, if it is a removable carpet, hang outside to dry. Or else buy a new on if it is possible.

Go to the store and rent a "rug doctor" or whatever they call the steam cleaner for carpets. It'll pick up the remaining water and will also clean your carpet before the mildew sets in it. Good Luck!

No, sorry, you'll have to replace the carpet. Even if you cant afford right now, rip that old mildewed carpet out before it gives you health problems! Molds a and mildew can cause serious respiratory infections, some stay with you for life, and never go away!

I was stayed at the Taj Mahal in Atlantic City and the spa tub overflowed and they used a fan to dry it, nothing else was necessary to prevent an odor.

Arm and Hammer Baking Soda would help absorb moisture and cut down on the smell. You'd probably need a lot, though.
