I just bought a new laptop and am having trouble connecting it (via patch cable) to my cable modem. Does my wireless LAN connection have to be disabled before I can connect to the modem via patch cable?

I unplugged the patch cable directly from my desktop computer and plugged into my laptop. I get a link light, but that's it.

If you have a wireless LAN, then your PC will only allow one active "LAN" connection, be it wired or wireless.

Are you getting a "link" light to come on - on the laptop side (usually a green or amber colored LED on the RJ45 or next to it)? If not, then you may need to get a cross-over cable.

You are using a "real" Ethernet cable right?
