As we know cloud is form up by large amount of water vapour, before raining the density of water vapour is high, since the density of water vapour is high, this make the cloud become bigger and thick, as a result, it block most of the sun light.

When the sky is completely covered with cloud and the sun is not visible(which is usually the case when there is rain or it is about to rain), the thckness of the cloud decides the colour;the deeper it is, the darker it is.

The stronger the storm is usually is indicated by the cloud tops or ceiling. The higher the ceiling the more sunlight is blocked by the clouds thus giving you a darker appearing cloud.

Water droplets absorb and scatter light, that is why clouds look white when the rest of the sky is blue.
Rain clouds look black to us because they are very dense and most of the light is getting absorbed or being reflected back into space. Basically we are in their shadow. If you were to fly above the cloud, it would still look white.

Water is beggining to exit the clouds, causing the molecules inside the clouds to swell up, the color is then black.
