my 6 month old caught a slight cough from me since saturday but he's totally fine -happy, sleeping well and eating. I introduced sweet potato to him yesterday morning and it was a little too thick for his liking so he gagged on it, which he's done when the cereal was too thick so I added formula but even after i thinned it out a lot he still gagged so i gave up. Last night and today in the morning I tried giving him his usual cereal and he's been gagging on every bite no matter how much i thinn it out - it's practically the consistency of his milk! Is it due to his cold? Did I traumatize him? Should I try giving him something he's used to like green beans? I don't know whats wrong with him he usually loves whatever I give him

It could be from the cold. He may have mucous build up...do you have an infant syringe? Try to clean his throat out with a bulb syringe to clear any mucous. If not, take him in the bathroom, close the door and run a hot shower to build steam up in the room. This will loosen any mucous, then proceed to gently pat him on the back to break it up more. Just keep trying different foods, maybe something sweet like apples to see if he will take to that.

Here's a random fact that I learned while taking care of a stroke survivor: At hospitals, with patients that are re-learning to eat, they actually THICKEN their liquids. Dry foods (like saltine crackers), and straight liquids are the hardest things for an "incompetent mouth" to swallow. So thinning out the cereal/potatos MAY be making it worse.

Also... If your son has a cough, it may be due to post-nasal drip, which could be making him gag. Also, milk brings on more phlem, which could also be the culprit.

As the other person that answered also suggested, try laying off the solids for a day or two, just untill his cough clears up. Hope that helps.

Don't worry hunn he's fine at 6 months i did the same thing with my child as your doing to yours at 6 months. A babys gag reflex is very sensitive you can even touch a spot in his mouth on his toung with a spoon and it can react it and cause him to gag i was worried when i did it i thought my child was choking cause it was my first so i jurked her out of the chair and patted her back lol. Now i have 2 its just something they all do sometimes they dont sometimes they do. Email me if you need more loveandbasketball_0408@hotmail.com

He probably has some chest congestion and some discomfort in his throat. If he had mucus back there, which he isn't able to bring up (as most babies can't), solids may not want to go down so easily. He doesn't require solids yet, so maybe stick to his formula for a few days to see if this clears up. You might, of course, want to check with his doctor about it...

He might just be playing with it. I would give solids a rest for a couple of days so that he doesn't seriously gag, and try again then.

Could be because the lil' guy isn't feeling well. For now, stick to what he you know he'll eat ( green beans). At least hell be getting somehitng in addition to his milk/formula. Good Luck!!
