The earth is a sphere (a three dimensional circle). An imaginary line is drawn at the equator that divides the earth into two equal parts. Anything above or North of that line is considered the Northern Hemisphere (Northern half-sphere) anything below or South of that line is considered the Southern Hemisphere (Southern half-sphere). Sometimes, we also refer to the Western Hemisphere or Eastern Hemisphere. This refers to the Prime Meridian which is an imaginary line that bisects the earth from pole to pole. West of the Prime Meridian is the Western Hemisphere. East of the Prime Meridian is the Eastern Hemisphere.
Do not feel badly for not knowing this. I teach Coast Guard Boating Classes to the public and most people are not aware of this. So, now you should learn about longitude and latitude.

Literally 'half a sphere'. The planet Earth is a sphere. The imaginary line called the Equator dissects the Earth. The top half is the Northern Hemisphere and the bottom half the Southern Hemisphere. This is the most usual way the word is used.
