A leader is a product or out come of being a good follower. Nobody become a good leader if he has not been a very good follower. He learns his being a good leader for being a good follower.
A leader must have all the extras that just a follower can have. He as a leader must have the right training, right level of mind, have the right attitude, knowledge of the things or objective the group he is leading, he must have the agility and bearing of a leader in such a way he is the ideal person of the group he is leading. He has the extra time to do what his men can't do, he has the capability to teach how a thing can be done properly , timely, and accurately and in good quality. He must have the intellect and the capability to decide accurately and timely. He calls the shot but humble enough to be too bossy but considerate enough and understanding, and most of all a leader must have the knowledge of all the potentials, and capability, and strength and weakness of his men under him. He must know when to tolerate, when to discipline, when to stop, when to dismiss, or when to give chance for proper motivation of all his men and fairly and equally. He is a mover, a source of boundless source of ideas to make things improve...he is the father of the group but like a brother so close but yet just far enough not easily be disrespected by abuse. He must be highly regarded by his men.
A leader must be indispensable, for without the leader, there is a big difference of gap and vacuum of leadership in the group. But a leader must have the quality to be able to train future leader/s in his group showing interest to be future leaders, so he must be able to multiply....ans not selfish...
A manager is a leader but better than a supervisor. He manage people of supervisors with team of men under their direct supervision. The manager programs the total long range plans, operations, activities, goals, objective, control production cost, results, and reasonable returns of the groups he is managing. He evaluates, analyze and distribute the work loads and objective of the total group. He is the think tank and delegates the works and responsibilities wisely to attain the reasonable return of the total objectives in certain desired period, and complete the whole cycles with innovative and progressive approach. He reports to top management of all the outcome, development, problems and further innovative approaches needing top management supports and prior approval. He informs the lower echelon of any orders or policies and new objectives from top to bottom. In the absence of the manager, the group must and be able to run the machineries of the working groups,,,,As a leader, he must be highly regarded by his people in all levels...and must train aspiring future managers for future reservations....All the qualities of a good leader must be possessed by the Manager....

If you look in the websters dictionary under lead and manage it says under both to direct the operations or affairs. So basicly there isn't any difference. Now morally some managers get extremely big swelled heads and think they know everything however I know I know only a little bit of what the business is that I am in and I say as much to any new employee so that they don't get a big swelled head when they get really good at thier position. Still leaders are prone to the same thing except no one will tell them so because they are the leader and everyone thinks they are supposed to know eveything. When in reality they know as much as the next person . So there really isn't any difference.

A leader is someone who takes charge, who isn't afraid to put his/her name on the line for the greater good of the team, and knows how things ought to be handled. A leader keeps a team focused on its missions or goals. A leader also is a neutral party, doesn't let his/her personal agenda cloud his/her mind in regards to accomplishing things.
Managers aren't leaders in my opinion because that individual may just manage things and he/she is trying to make things a little big easier for his/her co-workers. Believe that managers can be easily persuaded and can easily turn his/her back on its co-workers. Managers also don't have the same drive as a leader would. Now managers can become leaders and lead...er..."on ward". Most managers don't, from my personal experiences, it's too much work for them.

A manger does just that, they "manage". They manage your money, a department, a store. A leader is like your guide, they take you in a direction. A good leader inpires the people, a good leader can be a good person or a bad person, but they insipre people to follow them.. Example- George Washington and Hitler.

A leader is somewhat of a servant and leads by example. To lead someone you must submit to them.
A manager is someone who supervises or guides someone or a group by delegating. If we had more managers that could be leaders as well then the quality and work ethic of those under them would be much greater.

This is not mine and is of a military nature:
Managers manage things.
Leaders lead things.
We haven't learned to manage things INTO battle yet.

Leadership comes before management. It is doing the right things, but management is doing those things right. "Leadership" makes sure the ladder is against the right wall; "management" is efficiency in climbing the ladder of success.
So, leaders know their goals (long term focus), and managers know how to achieve these goals (the short term).
