I have asked this sort of question before, but I have just finished replacing the hoses on my 4x4, and I get so many comments as I was laying underneath it, up my driveway.
Do all guys (and girls!) think it is that unusual to see a woman working on a vehicle and not just washing it?!
I mean I was wearing my overalls, not a skirt and high heels!!

Generally speaking, there is a huge gender gap when it comes to automotive knowledge. People find it unusual to see a woman working on or under a car because it is unusual. There is absolutely nothing wrong with women working on cars or being interested in them, and in fact I think that auto shop should be required for every student in high school regardless of gender. If you took a common auto part like an alternator or an air filter and walked down the street and asked random people what it is, men and women, what the part is, it is almost a lock that more men would know than women. That in no way implies that women are less intelligent, it is a simple observation. If you take a speculum and did the same thing, the women would all know precisely what it was, and the men would all think it was some kind of automotive tool for reaming out tailpipes, and when you tell them what a speculum really does, the men would faint. That being said, if you were to wear high heels and a skirt and work on your car, you would have the undivided attention of a solid 80 percent of the male population. You will never find anyone who is more in favor of highlighting and embracing the differences between the genders, but a good-looking woman working on a car is quite alright with me.

Since the time is changing fast, no job can now be categorized as reserved for men only. In many cities in India to see women serving at petrol pumps has become a common sight.I was surprised and happy to read an article in a magazine that some illiterate women in rural Rajasthan ,India move from village to village in bicycles and repair the hand pumps , which draw underground water.Mechanical works have remained men's domain so far but there is no reason why women cannot take over. They learn fast and they fully concentrate on the job..

While buy today's standards I am considered chauvinistic because I believe men and women have their own basic places in life, I have always thought it quite absurd that most women can do no more than put gas in a vehicle. Who knows when the need might arise for them to be a bit more knowledgeable about things. It could save their life. I believe that a woman's place is in the home but because I live by myself, that doesn't stop me from cooking my own meals and keeping my home clean. I believe that over and above a woman's place and a mans place, a good rounded knowledge of all things is best for everybody. In other words, good for you, even by the standards of an old chauvinist pig.

Some people tend to classify people on incorrect assumptions. Assumptions like women can't fix cars or men can't clean a house.

It's good that you can do those things. Be proud of your skills. And remember every time you do something like that, think of the money you save.

And me, I enjoy doing those types of things, including helping my wife clean my home.

Cheers.

I think its absolutely fantastic that you are able to work on cars. If I was not married I would want to marry you and have little mechanics running around the front garden.

Well done my dear, it would be a good idea if more motorists knew more about their cars than just how to turn the key and change gear.

Most people are sexist and always put people into stereotypes. You keep working on your cars and doing what you want.

In fact......you can fix my truck if you want. LOL I'm not mechanically inclined but certainly wish I was.

I am in the process of teaching a "girl" how to customize.

She can airbrush already - and she can etch glass too.

Now on to the bigger stuff
