Honestly you don't necessarilly want a young turtle. They are hard to take care of, more often carry deadly parasites, and are not good for beginners.

how much experience do you have with reptile, specifically turtles?

Most turtles aren't gentle. They have sharp claws and "beaks" that hurt. . .a lot. . .if they get your finger/toe. Whether or not they are scared is dependent on the turtle, how it was treated, and where you get it from.

Russian Tortoises are extremely hardy, eat a wide variety of foods, and the one my boyfriend has is very docile and has a great temperment.

I have an Ornate Box Turtle, which is not as easy to take care of. He eats a lot of animal matter (crickets, mealworms, earthworms, etc.) and plant matter every now and then. Mine has been through the mill and has come out whole of the other side, so he's pretty hardy. But in general they are not hardy.

All turtles have very specific conditions in which they need to live. If you are going to get two, you need a large enclosure.

All depends on what kind of turtle you want. . .aquatic, semi aquatic (ornate box), or land (russian tortoise).

Also, how much time/money/resources are you willing to put into this? How big of an enclosure can your house accommodate and will you be able to make an outdoor enclosure for the warmer months of the year?

Answer those questions and I'll be able to give you specific info on a turlte that should work well for you. :)

Turtles are not really playful, don't like to be handled, and are usually scared of people.
