I disagree that Hudson can routinely make plays that Phillips cannot. You apparently don't watch that much baseball. If you are any fan of baseball please view the video from 8/30/07 http://cincinnati.reds.mlb.com/multimedia/tp_archive.jsp?c_id=cin&ym=200708

Sadly, the Gold Glove award isn't based off of Fielding % or Range Factor like it should be. It's based off the ESPN "Web Gem". Ironically, there are people pushing to make this a legit stat. How's that for dose of reality?

Because they look at a lot more than just fielding percentage when voting for the Gold Glove. Yes, it is probably a statistic that is looked at, so you shouldn't ever see a player with 30 errors win it over someone who has made 2, but itsn't not the only thing.

Players and managers look at players arm's, range and overrall play. Jeff Francouer won a Gold Glove this year not because he made the fewest errors (he didn't and 5 for an outfielder is a lot), but because if memory serves me correctly, he led the NL (if not all of MLB) in outfield assists. He's got a cannon of an arm and accuracy that was good enough to throw someone out about once every 8 games.

When you look at the difference between Hudson and Philips, the fielding % only differs by .005% which just isn't that much. The bigger difference is that Hudson routinely made plays that Phillips wouldn't be able to.

Perhaps because the award is not based on statistics alone, but rather a combination of statistics and visual effect.

From No Crying In Baseball: "The GOLD GLOVE was first awarded in 1957 by Rawlings. The honor is given to who the company believes is the best defensive player. Rawlings used a combination of of defensive statistics along with visual effect to determine a winner. In 1957, only one award was given to each position. In 1958 it was switched to each position by league." (1)

Today, it is the managers and coaches, not the company, that vote for a player at each position. Apparently, they have decided the 'visual effect' of Hudson outweighed the better fielding percentage of Phillips.

As it is said in baseball, "Beauty is in the eye of the ballot holder."

The gold glove is extremely puffed up. just to triumph over an previous concern count to dying ideal right here, derek jeter won 3 gold gloves. he's maybe the worst fielding shortstop interior the better leagues over that span of time. you will desire to study extra ideal than in fact blunders and fielding proportion to make certain who can somewhat play protection. Jeter has very sturdy palms on balls that he gets to, which keeps his blunders each and each of ways all the way down to an fairly low huge form. yet he can infrequently pass to his left, and his kind to his precise is declining. so even regardless of if he makes very few blunders, he makes like 15 much less performs a 300 and sixty 5 days than the elementary shortstop. additionally, the gold gloves are voted on with the aid of the managers in baseball, it somewhat is a horrifically undesirable concept. managers are no longer attending to video show plenty baseball distinctive than who they're enjoying that night. they must take heed to their own group, and have not have been given any time to purpose to make certain who the extra ideal defenders are. because of this, the Gold gloves fairly plenty continuously finally finally end up going to a guy in protecting with recognition. jeter makes some flashy spotlight form throws, so thats what people pay interest approximately. yet a participant like troy tuluwitski makes those performs look rutine, and so he gets much less votes, regardless of being the extra ideal fielder. so specific, they're extremely puffed up and somewhat, somewhat wrong.

The Rockies had the best fielding team in MLB history, and they didn't receive one Gold Glove.
SS Tulowitzky had over 100 more chances than Jimmy Rollins and each had 11 errors and Rollins gets the award, go figure?
I guess there is still a chance for pitchers with ERA's around 4.4 and around 12 wins to win the Cy Young.

I wouldn't say fraud. That's a little much. But the GGs have never really meant a lot. Certain players win every year regardless of how well they did. Jim Kaat, an excellent fielder, won a slew of GG awards. One year, however, he was injured and barely played at all. Mel Stottlemeyer happened to have had a 1.000 fielding percentage that year with the most attempts. Go figure. They are like Oscars. Nice to have one but no one really believes in them.

The Gold Glove awards does not just take fielding % into account. It also looks at range and they look at some of the high light type plays the players make. I agree it is not fool proof and every year players get ripped off, but fielding % is not the only factor.

Everyone knows that it is a popularity contest most of the time. Andruw Jones still wins the award on what he did in the past.

Fraud? No.

Flawed? Yes. And by now Rawlings must realize this, but has shown no interest in updating the voting methodology.
