No contest...The Beatles.

Not just for their songwriting, but their originality in the recording studio. They experimented with many different recording techniques, and revolutionalized studio production and were highly responsible for fashion trends, and changing the look of album artwork.

They are credited with the first concept album, "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band." ( Actually, I think this honor should go to the Kinks, but that's another story.)

Since the Beatles played to such large stadiums, they were partly responsible for sound systems upgrading to accomodate much larger crowds...etc.

The Beatles changed rock from its' one dimensional form. No other band can make this claim.

Either the Beatles or Black Sabbath. Neither one is my favorite, but being objective, I'd have to say one of those two. The Beatles essentially created rock and roll as we know it today. Of course Elvis and a lot of other American groups had invented rock and roll, but it was still more or less a hybrid of traditional American and African music fused together. The Beatles showed what rock music could be when freed from its American confines. Black Sabbath, on the other hand, invented metal and really pushed the bounds of what could be considered rock and gave it its dark edge. Heavy metal and grunge would not be around today without them.
