they need to keep Kaberle and White and get rid of the rest of the defence. White is young and still learning and Kaberle is great with the puck and you need a d-men that can move good with the puck. Kubina, McCabe and Hill terrible in their own end that's why they lose all the time with 5 to 6 goals against almost every game and then you might see the GAA Taskala and Raycroft go down but McCabe has a no trade close on his contract it's up to him if he wants to be traded, JFJ can't come up to him and ask, and that was the stupidest thing JFJ did as GM of the Leafs. sorry but it's true.

The most pressing need the leafs have right now is that they cannot play defensively and the teams this year are so fast that they make you pay for every little mistake, we have witnessed this first hand. They obviously need help from another source to teach them about positioning and strategy's. They look very disorganized often in there own end and get scored on. The talent they have can bring this team to the play offs, but anybody who knows hockey will tell you that if your defence stinks you will not win a lot of games in this new NHL. Remember the Leafs have the most goals for , yet it means nothing because they are constantly being score on. Defense , Defense , Defense , perhaps Scotty or Burns should be a consultant for the leafs as they were great defensive coaches.

Why get rid of McCabe? He wasn't even playing last night and they still lost. Obviously, he's not the direct problem. The most pressing need for the Leafs is everything. From management all the way down to the waterboys.
Garrett, you actually want Ted Rogers to buy out the OTP? That'll solve nothing. Rogers is expected to expire soon, and just like Conn Smythe, the Leafs will once again be thrown into disarray. Baisille (sp?) is more suited to buy out the OTP. He probably has to sell all of Research in Motion for that though, but it's a worthy investment.

Realistically, you're not going to get rid of the teachers, which means you are not going to get rid of Richard Peddie either. What they need to do is minimize Peddie's influence on the hockey team, just as they did with the Raptors. Bring in a knowledgeable hockey guy to replace JFJ. What in the world has JFJ ever accomplished to deserve so much leeway, I don't get it. They also need a coach who can work with the GM. I'm not saying Maurice is a bad coach, but he is a run and gun coach who does not have a run and gun team. There needs to be a better match, every body seem to be working out of their element.
They need to cut back on the number of 4'th line quality forewards. 3 would be a more workable number than the 6 or 7 they have now. Get some guys who can skate and stick-handle at the same time, maybe some passing ability, too. A big name winger to go with Cap'n Mats. Antroponi and Blake would make a better second or third line.
For defence, we have Kaberle and five expensive number six guys. Brian Mc Cabe is a good $2 mm, 15 minute per game guy. He performed great when his role and expectations matched his ability. Get rid of some of the #6 type defencemen and bring in some #3 and 4 guys.
Make the 'no trade clause' forbidden literature.

The most pressing need for the Maple Leafs is a New General Manager & a new Coach.
No matter what brilliant move JFJ comes up with to help the team he will screw up the next 3 deals to make things worse.
Maurice is a bush league trap coach and with no red line he will never put a consistently good team on the ice.
But most of all new ownership who wants to put a winning team on the ice and who doesn't mind spending some extra money on scouts, General Managers or Coaches.
Leafs problems start at the top who they have on the ice is far from the biggest of the Leafs worries.

The ownership group is fine, they were the teams owners when they went to the semi-finals in 1999, and 2002, and while they went to the playoffs evey year from 1997 through 2004.
The problem is that the top hockey guy is John Ferguson Jr. (yes, he's a hockey guy whethyer you like him or not). But, the top guy on the hockey side is Richard Peddie. That's wrong.
The top guy on the hockey side should be a hockey guy. A hockey guy who knows the other unemployed hockey guys well enough to hire one of those unemployed hockey guys as a General Manager...or a Director of Player Personnel, etc.
Richard Peddie knows diddley-squat about hockey. John Ferguson Jr gets fleeced more often than Mary's sheep, and Maurice was a 0.500 coach in hockey's worst division for years.
None of this is a recipe for success.
They need a hockey guy to be a President of the hockey side. The Hockey Guy president needs to hire a General Manager who can withstand the Toronto market and a Director of Player Personnel who knows the ropes. The General Manager then has to hire an assistant to help him out, and a coach whom the players will respect and respond too.
Once all these hockey guys are in place, Fox can premiere "Hockey Guy" (the kids head will be puck-shaped instead of football shaped and he'll be named Peter) after "Family Guy", and we can watch that instead of the Leafs lose (because you know they will)

Getting rid of Mccabe is easier said than done... and while he's not playing up to his inflated salary, he's hardly the reason the franchise has been lingering along.
What the Leafs need to do is REBUILD. That means the fans are going to have to accept a lean season or two... To begin that, ownership needs to bring in a GM that even the most rabid Leafs fan believes in...

New defence. Their goalies aren't bad, but you're not going to win games by giving up the most goals in the league. The funny thing is they don't give up a lot shots, they just give up good scoring chances. If you look at the Ottawa-Toronto game, Ottawa's goals were 2 on 1s and what not. Giving a team that many chances will mean a lot of goals.
Stop giving up the 2 on 1s. That means the d-men have to willing to accept the fact there are times when it's better not to go after the puck in the neutral zone, and let the other team's offence bring it down the ice.

1) A new defensive core, one that won't score on his own net.
2) JFJ gone. He's not working out. Don't wait til the end of the season to re-evaluate. Do it now and get someone with a vision in there.
3) Buy out the Teacher's Pension portion of ownership. Preferably by Rogers.

Better fans. MUAH HA HA HA!!
I jest. I think you are right. They need better defense, i.e. guys who actually play, you know, DEFENSE. Raycroft and Toskala can't do it all themselves. McCabe and Kaberle are talented guys on the power play, but neither of them is all that good at stopping the other teams' best players. Maybe more ice time needs to be given to the guys that actually mind the store.
