Polyketide synthases are enzymes that produce secondary metabolites (biological products that are not critical for life, but are used for secondary functions) called polyketides in cells, particularly bacteria. Polyketides, in turn, often have applications as chemical and pharmaceutical products. So by manipulating PKSs, a bacterial cell could be turned into a drug factory.
