Could you also help me definte some of these terms? My son has recently really gotten into hockey and I would like to be able to talk about it with him.

G - Goals. Pretty self-explanatory, I think.

A - Assists. Given to the 2 players on the team of a goal scorer to last touch the puck before the goal was scored, assuming the team kept possession between these touches.

+/- - Plus/Minus. A player gets a "plus" if he's on the ice when his team scores an even-strength or shorthanded goal and a "minus" if he's on the ice when his team gives up an even-strength or short-handed goal. No +/- is given for powerplay goals, and goaltenders don't get plusses or minuses.

PIM - Penalties in minutes. 2 for a minor, 5 for a major, 10 for misconduct (including game misconducts, which are scored as 10 PIM even though the player is ineligible for the rest of the game)

PPP - Power-play points. Total of G and A scored on the powerplay.

SOG - Shots on goal. A shot is recorded when a player scores or takes a shot that would go into the goal if it wasn't stopped by the goaltender. Shots that miss the net or hit the goalposts aren't counted; neither are shots blocked by a player other than the goalie.

W - Wins. Awarded the the goaltender who's in net when the team's game-winning goal is scored.

GAA - Goals against average. Goals allowed by a goaltender per 60 minutes of play.

SV% - Save percentage. Percentage of shots on goal against a goalie that he stops.

SHO - Shutouts. Awarded to a goalie who doesn't give up any goals in a complete game.
