hi, i have a 55 gallon fish tank set up. i have the heater set to 81 degrees... my heater is in the water, and the light comes on as if it is heating up the tank. but the water is still pretty cold. is it because the heater is too weak for a 55 gallon tank or are all heaters the same, no matter what size tank it is?

Your heater may not be powerful enough for your tank, you need a 300 watt heater for a 55 gallon tank, but I always use two heaters, that way you have a back up if one fails.
Not all heaters are the same, they come in different wattage depending on the size of tank they need to heat.
81 degrees sounds high to me for a marine tank I have mine set at 76 degrees, obviously this raises slightly when the light are on, but never reaching 81 degrees.

How many watts is your heater, you want about 5 watts per gallon of water so for a 55 gallon your heater should be 250-300 watts.

Make sure the heater is made for that big of a tank, if it is and it's not working properly then the heater may be malfunctioning. Water feels colder then it actually is so use a themometer to make sure it isn't at the proper heat before worrying.

JUST GET 2 30WATT HEATERS. OR
Even thought the light is on it might be broken.
Just like you i had a heater that wouldn't warm the water but the light turned on. Until one day i touched the heater( while in the water) to test it. It was broken. I bought the same brand the next day and until now it is working fine.

Water at this temperature will always feel cold if you put your hand in there
As long as it turns on and off again it should be working just fine
Get a thermometer to check your temperature

Hope that helps
Good luck
