Is a cooling fan device a good idea for PS3 or is this just a money making gimmick?

It says it'll extend the life of the machine.

I would think PS3 makers will make the machine last a long time without an external cooling device!!

What do you think?

No, the cooling device isn't needed for the PS3. Plus, the PS3 intercooler voids the PS3's warranty. The PS3 doesn't have overheating problems and Sony made a console that will last for a long time, so don't worry about it.

I happen to know the 360's inter-cooler is not a waste of money, the number of people I've heard of who's machine has overheated is phenomenal for such console. I don't know about the PS3's one though, the console seems to have its own secondary cooler that comes on when it gets hot and goes off again once its cooled down. But with all this technology i would say that if your wanting to make sure it doesn't over heat then it's not a waste of money, it's like your protecting your investment. It does also depend on where its stored if its in an enclosed cupboard or shelving unit then it may well over heat easier than if it was on the floor in front or beside the TV

Most cooling devices are just gimmicks. I do not know too much about the PS3, but I do know that the Xbox 360's intercooler is a waste of money.

Normally they make these just so they can get more money. Only Microsoft are the idiots who will mess up their cooling system. I don't think you have to worry about the PS3 too much.

I would say it's dependent on your area where you put the PS3 or 360 is if you need a cooling device. I have my systems in cabinets that have tons of space. As long as the systems have space to breathe, the cooling should take care of itself.
