Why do they sometimes advertise movies as "opening only in theatres"?

Where else would they open? The supermarket?

Because it is only opening in theatres, and not available in DVD. Please that there are straight-to-DVD movies, which are also shown in theatres at the same time... this is because of marketing reasons...

First run movies are shown in theaters because of ticket sales. Have you bought a movie ticket lately? You just about have to bring your credit card with you.

Films may also be shown at hotels, outdoor venues (drive-in), football stadiums etc.
