It could be the Last Post (solo cornet) or Nimrod, from the Enigma Variations by Elgar (more orchestral): I've heard them both used on the TV coverage.


Edited: rdenig_male is right, they don't play the Last Post specifically during the laying of poppies, sorry, but it is part of the ceremony.

They play various pieces of music as it takes a long time for all the poppies to be placed on the Cenotaph - first the Queen and Royal Family, then Heads of State, then the long march past. They usually play Nimrod from Elgar's Enigma Variations and Walford Davies Solemn Melody before the ceremony starts, together with pieces like David of the White Rock and Flowers of the Forest.

They most certainly do not play The Last Post when poppies are being laid, but as a prelude to the 2 minutes silence.

try the enigma variations by edward elgar. the part is called nimrod, it makes the hair on my neck bristle.

They use a medley of tunes...my personal favourite is the Beethoven funeral march

Don't know the music but just to let you know, it is spelt CENOTAPH not Senitaf.
