On his first day in the Senate, McCarthy called a press conference where he proposed a solution to a coal-strike that was taking place at the time. McCarthy called for John L. Lewis and the striking miners to be drafted into the Army. If the men still refused to mine the coal, McCarthy suggested they should be court-martialed for insubordination and shot.

Actually the documents that show the senator was right have been available for decades. I remember seeing something about it on tv some 5-10 yrs ago too.

McCarthy had opinions that went above and beyond patriotism to absolute jingoism. He jailed people because they were in the proximity of communists (which, btw, communism isn't illegal in America, so this is outrageous on two levels), and staged wild and exaggerated political stunts to try to get people paranoid enough to support him.
I'm definitely not a communist, but I think that McCarthy's tactics were far too militant and inappropriate to be justifiable, especially given the tense circumstances in world politics at the time.

I have to say that ivanna's answer above pretty much nailed it with one exception: they were not guilty of treason, since the Soviet Union was never technically our enemy. De facto enemy? Sure, but we were never legally at war with them, ergo supporters could not be guilty of treason. Espionage and subversion, yes, treaon, no.

did you know that Jews really were in high positions of authority, the wealthiest demographic, and owned much of the business and industry in pre-Nazi Germany?
well, go on, now that you have the facts you can start defending Hitler. in America you are allowed to be a communist if you so choose. adhering to a certain ideology is not a crime, but it would have been had McCarthy had his way.

The guy is no historian, notice how you didn't say that Evans is a board member of the Far Right group called the American Conservative Union.
Read about him, it's clear that he's biased to the Right.

Oh please. So now the goal is to resurrect McCarthyism. Yes, let’s start reporting our neighbors to the authorities for being un-American and let’s start calling anyone we disagree with a Communist. Red-baiting worked pretty well, for a while, back then so why not resurrect it. "McCarthy was right" is a very sad and pathetic statement in this day and age.

Joe McCarthy was wrong in generalities, he was wrong in specifics. He accused - without evidence anyone that was against his 'hate' speech, he was in turn reviled not just by liberals, but my conservatives, by agnostics, by virtually everyone that had associations with him.
Communist threat? You might want to read some headlines in the last 15 years. You also might want to realize that - declassified documents were written in a time of fear (thanks to Mr McCarthy et al). The proof is not in the documents, but in what context those documents are supported by other evidence.

Oh now there is a great source of truth. I have documents that tell me that there are Chinese colonies on the moon. That Hitler is alive in Columbia and that Elvis sells hamburgers in Minnesota. What else ya got?
Have you seen and interpreted these documents? Didn't think so.
Of course the evidence is ignored. It was 50 years ago. Distorted history, once again, of course, that is done all the time. Grow up.
