1) If you hear thunder one second after seeing the lightning, then the bolt was 1100 feet away. Three seconds = 3300 feet (close to 1 kilometre). Five seconds = ?
How many feet in a mile?

2) How many seconds in an hour? There are 60 minutes in an hour, and each minute has 60 seconds.

3) One easy way is to find out how many scoops you need for one ounce (two divided by 8 = 1/4) then find out how many ounces in each sub-question.

Formula of determining distance of storm in feet:
distance = 1,100 multiplied by no. of seconds

Distance traveled by the snail in inches:
= (60 * 60) / 10
= 3,600 / 10
= 360

Scoops of lemonade needed:
10 ounce glass:
= 10 * 1/4
= 10/4
= 5/2 or 2 1/2 scoops

12 ounce glass:
= 12 * 1/4
= 3

Liter:
= 33.814023 * 1/4
= 8.453506

Question 1
The more seconds you count, the further away the storm is.
1 second, the strike is 1100 feet
10 seconds, the strike is 11,000 feet.

Question 2
Think of dirt...

d=rt
distance = rate * time.

rate=distance/time
rate of snail = 1 inch/10 seconds

distance = 1/10 * (an hour in seconds)

an hour has 60 minutes and a minute has 60 seconds.

an hour has 60*60 seconds

distance = 1/10 * 3600
distance = 360 inches

question 3.

set up proportions

2/8=x/10

2/8=x/12

2/8=x/(convert liters to ozs)

The trick is keeping track of units. If you want to know how far mulitply ft/sec by seconds. The seconds in the denominator cancel with the secs in the numerator and you are left with feet. If you count 3 seconds then
1100ft/sec*3sec=3300ft 3300ft*1mile/5280ft
=3300/5280 miles because the ft cancel.

10s/1" x 1hr/3600s = 10hr/3600"=1hr/360in (seconds in numerator cancel seconds in denominator leaving hrs/in) so in 1hr it goes 360 inches.

2scoops/8oz=1scoop/4oz=.25scoops/oz
Now just multiply .25 scoops/oz by the number of ounces and you have the scoops needed.
quart=32oz and .25*32=8 scoops
10*.25=2.5 scoops
12*.25=3 scoops
1 liter = .264179gal*128oz/gal=33.8oz/liter
.25*33.8=8.5scoops
