I'm trying to really free up space on my computer and its like A LOT of fragmented files were there. My computers capacity is 37 GB and last month I had 10 GB of my own memory and the computer had its own memory of 27 GB. I now have 3 GB of memory left but its still saying that i have low disk space (like 200MB left). I really need help on this.

defragmentation is the process of organizing your files in order. Think of your computer as a messy room. Defragmentation is putting each thing in the right place it belongs so that it is easy for you to find something when you try to search something...similarly, on your computer if you defrag the computer organizes the files so that it becomes easier for the computer to find the files...

that process boosts up ur speed
to do this go to:
Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Defragmenter

it takes a bit of time to defrag a computer...

but to free up space go to
Start>All Programs>Accesories>System Tools>Disk Cleanup

or download CCleaner

http://www.ccleaner.com

both of these cleans up unwanted files on your computer...

I would recomment CCleaner but for casual use Disk Cleanup is ok

Don't confuse Hard Drive storage with memory...they aren't the same thing.

When any files is stored, it is broken down into fragments, so part of an letter might be stored at one place and the other part in another place. When the computer retrieves this file it has to go to both these places. Defrag puts things in better order for retrieval.

When you say you had 10 GB and the computer had 27GB, do you mean that is what was free and full?? Cause then you should NOT be getting a low disk space error. I would run some spyware and virus scanners.

Both free...run in safe mode (F8 while booting brings you to safe mode)

You can download ccleaner for free here: http://bit.ly/1Bk5V5C

First open CCleaner
Go to the Cleaner tab and you will be confronted by a very confusing lineup of checkboxes.
To make this brief, below is my recommended setup:
Under internet explorer check temporary internet files, cookies, and last download location. Most users don't really need this stuff. keep history and bookmarks unchecked, history is a maybe, but you don't want to lose bookmarked sites. You can normally leave Windows Explorer, System, and Advanced alone.
Run CCleaner and it will start deleting files.
afterward it will present you with a list of the files deleted, you really don't need to go through it as it will be several pages long.
The registry cleaner is recommended for slightly more advanced users. Use it after uninstalling programs as they will often leave behind incorrect registry entries.
If you decide to run Registry cleaner then review the items detected and always back up the registry (I keep a folder aside for this)
The Tools tab lets you uninstall programs and set startup programs. Why do you need this if Windows has all of these features? Especially with Vista Home Ed. The windows defender software explorer( startup programs) doesn't pick up some entries (however software explorer is easier to use).
Using CCleaner to uninstall programs and then check for leftover registry entries takes less time.
Under Options you can determine how CCleaner cleans your files. I leave this alone.

A fragmented file is a file whose contents are scattered here and there on the hard disk. These files slow up the system performance. You can defragment them as follows:
1. Open My Computer
2. Right click any of the logical dirve(C:, D: etc.) which
you want defragment, and click properties.
3. Now in tools tab click on Defragment Now-> Defragment.

There are several tools available to free up the disk space on the hard disk. These tools deletes all the unnecessary files like temporary internet files, recovery files etc. Use these tools to free up disk space on your hard disk.

I'm having trouble finding a good analogy to explain defragmented files, but maybe can help you clean up your PC. First go to; start/control panel/administrative tools/component services. Double-click on an item which is set to start automatically, which will open a window where you can either disable it or set it to manual. This will free up some of your PCs 'running memory' (think of it as how much desk space is needed to have each book{for each running process} open on a desk.

Then run seperate searches on your PC for ; music, images and read me files. Make disk copies of what you want to keep and (except for sounds and images needed) delete the rest.

Then you should get BeClean- a program which cleans up broken links and paths, unusable files/folders/registry entries and other unnecessary things. It has always worked for me, but as each PC is unique- feel free to email me, IM me (MySpace IM) or call me (email for phone #) to walk you through any of what I'm recommending. Run BeClean after the next step.

Then open start/ control panel/ add-remove programs. There always seem to be programs that are not wanted or needed (I have teenagers who don't listen). This will free up even more space. After this, run BeClean, then defragment. If there are still problems, this will require more involved cleaning/adjusting.

Try what I've recommended first and if more help is needed, let me know.

Your hard drive can split files and store them on separate physical locations. Then it is considered "fragmented." It does this especially when you install or delete programs.

If you go to start>all programs>accessories>system tools>disk defragmenter in Windows XP you can run the disk defragmenter.

You can also run disk cleanup from there. But the fastest way to free up space is to remove unwanted programs and/or video files you no longer need.

Defragmented files are files which have become all messed up on the hard disk, so they take up a bit more space than usual. If you're running XP, then go to:
Start>all programs>accessories>system tools>disc defragmenter
And run that, then run the Disc cleanup wizard, which is also in System tools.
Following that, uninstall any programs you don't really need.

After deleting old movies that you don't want; clearing of music that you have copies of on CD; and getting rid of, printing, or making disc copies of all your old school papers, run Disk cleanup, Scan Disk, and Disk Defragmenter in that order. Always run Disk Defragmenter last, because all of those other programs leave fragments behind.

Your storage capacity appears to be disappearing quickly. Have you scanned for viruses?
