Tendulkar was the obvious choice and everyone thought it was as good as done. But he's refused to be the team's test captain. Why do you think he took that decision?

Not to take more pressure

There is no doubt about how great a player Sachin is. But to be a great player and good Captain are two sides of the same coin. Leadership qualities are gifted ones. This is what Sachin lacks. We have seen in the past that the record of Indian team under his Captaincy was not satisfactory though his own performance was excellent during that period. So if any one thinks that he refused the captaincy due to the pressure it is totally unjustified. Rather it is the greatness of sachin who understands his Strengths and weaknesses and keeping those in mind refused the test captaincy. Also every player however great has to retire from the game one day, Sachin still has a lot of Cricket still left in him but one cannot deny the fact that his carrier will not last for more than three to four more years. So the chance must be given to young players to groom as new captain. But I wonder why Dhoni is not given the Captaincy for Test Mactches as well. Some says that is still Young enough to handle the pressure of test cricket. This is totally imaginary as i said earlier Leardership quality is gifted one. The successful captain of South Africa Greame Smith was given the Captaincy of SA when he was only in his early twenties and he is doing very well since than.

Its a great decision by Sachin. I highly appreciate. There have been responses like he has grown old, he's not in form, lacks leadership skills etc. But these are not the reasons for his non-acceptance of the captaincy offer. Sachin as we all know is now 34 years old and would not play for more than a couple of years. the same case hold for Ganguly and Dravid too.He knows that he is towards the end of his career and that a young player should take the responsibility of captaincy rather than him. After two years when the Big 3 are gone there would be all the problems and controversies about the captain.

Now in the last phase of his career he has actually given chance to young players to lead the side and become a mature captain by the time seniors leave. A young captain under the experience of big guys like Sachin, Sourav and Rahul would certainly groom and become a mature leader.

In nutshell he did not accept the captaincy for his personal reasons but for the benevolence of the Indian cricket which he has loved and served for almost 2 decades.

Sachin is a very intelligent man is refusing the captaincy, he has expressed his desire to play for another 3 - 4 years more. If he is made captain, obviously it is going to effect his batting, which is not what it used to be 3 - 4 years back, and the team does not do well, then his fate will be similar to that of Ganguly. But now he can be assured of a place in team and if he scores at least 2 - 3 50's in the next 5 test matches.

Why do you think Sachin was choosen as a Test Captain ? One should remember that this is not the first time Sachin has denied the Captaincy. Earlier he denied that because he felt that he need to concentrate on his batting rather trying to build up the team from the scratch. But now the thing is different. If Sachin does not perform well as a Captain, he will be surely be put out of the team. I personlly feel Sachin has made a right decision. Go Sachin!!!

Sachin was wise enough to decide against captaincy. Its the time when 20-20 Team is performing well under Dhoni and its the right time to have a youngster as a captain.Though Veteran Kumble has got the post,Sachin definitely sacrificed for better future of Indian Cricket Team. He's always there with loads of experience to guide any new captain who can then learn the values needed to lead Team India even after Sachin and likes retire from International Version.

Wise guy.

Very.

Clearly knows what will suit him best.

Captaincy is a position which can be (and should be) graced only once. Once he has graced it. Once he was disgraced from it.

He knows that "remarriages" do not work. If the love is lost, it is forever.

The "beauty" Captaincy has already "married " four (or five?) guys after she has deserted him. Now she is at his mercy again. It would have been a bigger joke if he had entertained her.

The smaller joke is that, ours is the only team where you will witness one current captain and three ex-captains playing for you !! Add to it a vice captain, and you have half of the team made of captains. In the remaining half there are some "would have been" captains. So gentlemen, our Captaincy is a very "modern" girl. No wonder Sachin refused her. He is liberal but he knows the boundary to it. I do support Sachin in his step.

The tragedy is that, now the girl Captaincy is about to remain a spinster. The girl who eluded many and flirted with a number, now has come to the unevitable, marry with an old guy.

I can give 3 reasons...because i don't know what exactly sachin thought to reject the captaincy offer:

1) Too much politics in BCCI & Team selection.
2) Sachin failed twice as a captain excepting the Titan Cup Win. And also being a captain will add extra pressure which might affect his batting form. This thought might be the main reason for him to reject the captaincy offer.
3) The series that are ahead especially the Australia Tour will be very tough and there is every possibility India might fail in that assignment and Sachin won't want to be a Captain fearing failure. This thought may not be true, but who knows!

Sachin Tendulkar is a legend...no doubt. He is a class player and to all his critics he has answered which could be seen with his sizzling 99 against Pak in the 2nd ODI at Mohali. To all those who actually know nothing about cricket n say that he is not in form or his memorable are very few,I present a comparable STATS after the world cup 2007(ODI)
Tendulkar Matches-20 Runs-959 H.S-99 Avg:47.95 100/50-0/9
Yuvraj Singh Matches-26 Runs-845 H.S-121 Avg 40.23 100/50-1/4
Dhoni Matches-24 Runs-733 H.S-139* Avg-40.72 100/50-1/5
Ganguly M-20 Runs-687 H.S-88 Avg-38.16 100/50-0/6
Dravid M-20 Runs-460 H.S-92* Avg-30.66 100/50-0/3

This clearly proves Tendulkar's consistency.
As to why he refused captaincy,Sachin already has a tremendous amount of pressure on him ,by takin that extra burden on himself may affect him as a player. Moreover his record as a captain is not impressive. When he was the captain ,he was the lone player at that time ,it was like Sachin TEndulkar vs other teams .Now young players are present in the team who have shown their presence felt in the team many times. Therefore, for the betterment of the team Sachin decided to refuse the captaincy and I feel that was the right decision.
As to those who say he should retire and let young players take his place,I would say that a replacement for a man of such high calibre is not there in the world ,let alone India.

After T20 world cup victory, India looked to be going through some chnages, as was percieved by many people that young guns are doing great for India. Mahendra Singh Dhoni is doing a good job as a captain and Sachin perhaps felt that it is a good time for more youngsters to be infused into the team. He must have felt that if the captaincy is with Dhoni, perhaps more and more young players will get an opportunity to play in tests and the tean will perform better intests too, as it has done in T20. Also, because of his age he knows that he has reached a stage, where he might have to leave any time, as he has been going through fitness problems as well. So, he thought that it will be better to leave the captaincy along with the team into the hands of young people, many of whom are waiting for an opportunity and this is perhaps the best opportunity to give them a chance. I do not think that India can go a long way with older players like - Ganguly, Zaheer, Sehwag etc, as none of them seem to be taking the game seriously and have not been performing well as regular as Mathew Hayden of Australia has been performing. More over, their body language do not seem to be very inspiring. Politics might also be a reason and a person of Tendulkar's stature it is hard to tolerate all the dirty nuances of BCCI politics at this stage. Tendulkar is a great person and in the best interest of the team, he has wisely refused the captaincy. I do not think that he is unable to handle this, but looking into the future interest of the Indian cricket, he has sacrifised the offer, paving the way for some young player to lead the team.

Sachin refused the captaincy although his form presently from the England Tour has been very good. I feel his decision is mainly due to 2 facts :
1> He hasn't done quiet well being a Captain and since he knows he is in the dusk of his career he wants to end his career with no controversies and no problems.

2> He has seen his other 2 most senior team members being simply played with silly Indian politics being the Captain. So he has chosen not to face the same fate.
