There is no single important step that could
transform our nation. There is a whole slew of steps that is needed for the purpose and the medium of this forum will not be adequate to do
full justice because the list itself will run to
several pages and the explanation for each will
necessitate a disquisition.Even if all the replies
you receive are collated the unsaid steps will
need to be published in book form to make a cogent answer.

Not one thing is going to transform our nation. Five stepes will make this nation a lot better.

1. Improve our education system
2. Improve our belief that we can do anything we want (ie: relying on fossil fuels, supporting dictators, invading countries, etc..) without consequences.
3. Put an amendment in the Constitution that says the President cannot override the Constitution.
4. Improve our health care system so that every child can get it.
5. Remember that all people are created equal in the eyes of God and the laws of the land (regardless of anything)

Repeal The 17th Amendment. Most of the problems we now face are the result of the direct election of Senators which fundamentally changed this Nation from the Republic intended of its Founding Fathers to the degenerate representative democracy within the International Socialist Welfare Police State we have now. The Senate was supposed to be a buffer of elder statesmen (women) between the temporary passions of a fickle people and state power represented by the LAW. Direct suffrage made Senators beholding to those fickle people and their temporary passions. The immediate result was Prohibition which was later repealed. Need I say more?

I am amused by the answers above wishing for "free" health care. Can I get a "free" house, car, and motorcycle too? LOL.

I think that the most dangerous aspect of our country is the pace at which government spending has been growing. (Pick a time frame - since the 1930's, since the 1970's, etc)

The most important step for our nation to remain solvent is to tie government spending to the inflation rate.
