I have a laparoscopy just over a week ago - the good news is that it was all clear, so the surgery was pretty simple.

I was just wondering how normal it was still to be in a lot of pain 9 days later - it's just one area about the size of a 2p next to my belly button (not at the incision site) and it has kept me awake, can't concentrate easily the pain and can't have my trousers (or anything else) touching it.

I went to the docs yesterday and he said it was probably just muscle bruising and should be better 10-12 days after sugery as it can get worse before better but if I start to feel unwell go back (had a slight temperature).

Am I just over worrying and most women go through this or is it something I should keep any eye on? Gentle touch feels like someone is cutting me open and the pain is constant even with pain killers. Its a very sharp pain - I have what I would describe as brusing pain lower down which I'm not worried about at all.

Any info/experiences appreciated.

it can be really painful, it sounds like maybe they have caught something . I have had 3 due to endrometriosis and also had bits removed and it didn't hurt for this long after, after about 3 days thigs settled, are you having bleeding? I agree about the temperature, but I would maybe see another dr or if it doesn't get better soon go to a and e, on a different matter, i have had a lot of colonoscopies and if ther is pain like you describe you have to go to A and E, I d on't want to scare you it just does n't sound as it should be not 9 days lter,. the brusing sounds normal but i am worried about it stopping you sleeping , I have had nmajor surgery and after this tuime things should be better, hopre it feels better soon, xxxxx

What wonderful story of you getting pregnant. My daughter has endometriosis and suffers terribly. She was unable to conceive and had many month of IVF before getting pregnant. Sorry you asked about Laparoscopy well my daughter had a really bad time had it (three times). And swears she will never have another one even though she still under the Gyno Specialist and may need another one. So I think that everyone has different experiences from what I have heard. Good luck and I hope a cure is found for this dreadful illness. Do you know it is only this year that it has been recognised as a notifiable illness and I suffered with it many years ago, so not much advancement has been made in finding a cure.

I've had several laparoscopies and have never dealt with this before.
I'm surprised that your doctor didn't give you an antibiotic. It's not normal to have a temperature like this. It could be an infection.
I'd go back in a few days if the pain doesn't go away. Meanwhile keep an eye on your fever...

The average time to recover from a laparoscopy is 1-2 weeks but it can take longer than that depending on how much work was done such as to try and find out if endometriosis is a problem (just using this as an example).

The area can still be pretty tender even at 8-12 weeks because of the moving of organs around during the surgery so please be careful not to overdo even if you find that you feel good.

Also, I would recommend continue to eat lightly for a while because your stomach will be quite sensitive for a while longer.

If you have other questions for me please feel free to e-mail or IM me off site any time.

The post-operative experience, just like the pre-operative experience, can be quite variable. We cannot always pinpoint the reasons for the variations. I see men for laparoscopic prostate cancer surgery. Some are moping two weeks later, some are running around the nurses station within a few hours. Some don't mind the catheter, some hate it! Leaving aside the possibility that something is organically wrong (herniated bowel, for instance, or a clogged drain), to a great extent it seems that the variations in response reflect variations in personality and coping styles.
