Yes, I think that can happen to most of us at one time or another. I will need to wind down by watching some boring TV program like CSPAN or an old Ronald Reagan movie. LOL
Normally, one small drink of alcohol will help, but no more than that. Sometimes a half a shot of liquor of choice in a hot cup of decaf tea will do the trick wonderfully. It works very well when I am sick, so when I am healthy I guess it would also do the trick.
Hmm, a single, unattached dog lover, just like me. Perhaps you and I should talk? =)

In church I'm so tired but I can't go to sleep. Some times I'm sleeping on a bus or on a plane but I can hear every one individually, I can sense things better than when I'm awake. Kind of like I'm not really sleeping, but my body's dead and my brain isn't.

I have! I've worked as a production assistant on a game show and I'd work 12-15 hour days. When I go home I'm so dead tired but I can't go to sleep right away. My body is so tired, but my mind is still racing. To me, that has to wind down first for me to fall asleep.

This is a very common problem, very common. The medications available for the treatment of recurrent insomnia are very good and some are not physically addictive.
If the insomnia persists/worsens, then you should see the physician to excluded medical factors which may be interfereing with your normal sleep pattern and if he/she deems appropriate, then there are wonderful medications for the treatment of anxiety/depressive disorders which can help you sleep and function better in your daily life.

Yeah, like when I go crawl in bed and I just want to go to sleep but I just can turn my brain off, it's still going and going and thinking about everything I have to do, and I just lie there tired but wide awake.
