A diff follows its name it is designed to compensate for the difference in turning distances between the inside back wheel or the inside front wheel from the small distance on the inside to the longer distance on the outer wheel at any one turning point on the roads. In short the inside wheel travels much less distance than the outer wheel therefore the differential free wheels the inner wheel while the outer remains driven ~~
