I'm confused about the difference between intel's dual core processor and amd's 2 sets of 2 core processors. it sounds like it's the same to me. someone please explain because I am looking into building my own computer and I want the best there is!

There is no such thing as a Core 2 Duo Quad-Core, there is the Core 2 Duo which is Dual Core and the Core 2 Quad which is Quad Core (actually two Dual Core dies on the one chip).

When AMD say true Quad Core they mean to say that all four cores are on the same processor die. It should offer performance advantages but how well it will compete with the Core 2 Quad is still an open question (at least for me, I haven't seen any benchmarks comparing the two).
