use overdrive? don't floor it when you get the green light. brake a little earlier than usual. take the foot off the gas and let momentum carry the vehicle forward at time, especially going down a slope

Just use common sense techniques, no "jack rabbit" starts, smooth braking, Use your vehicle, dont abuse it. Most important, keep it serviced at proper intervals. Ivan says use higher grade fuels, dont do that, that is nothing more than a waste, even more so with the high gas prices today. Most of todays cars use the recommended 87 octane fuel, using a fuel with higher octane than recommended can leave deposits in the engine because the engine's ignition system isnt hot enough to burn it. Higher grades are not always better. Refer to your owners manual for efficiency tips as well.

burn a higher grade fuel.
(some fuels have a higher energy density that in theory will produce more power using the same amount, assuming the motor is capable of burning it. a fuel composed of pure hexatane would have an even higher energy density. That mechanic knows what he is talking about, but he doesn't know what I am talking about).
keep the engine mantained. keep the whole car mantained.
precicely control the fuel mixture to optimize it for the engine and environmental conditions. make sure the fuel is completely burned. don't use air conditioning, or power stearing, or an automatic transmission. use as little material as possible in the engine. keep the engine running at the point in the power curve where efficiency is at its max.

Drive like their is an egg under your gas and brake pedals. If you mean what can you do to your car to make it more efficient you can change the air filter, spark plugs, and fuel filter. Also have the fuel system and intake system cleaned and make sure you change your oil regularly. Please dont use premium fuel unless your car calls for it. You will get no better mileage, spend more money on gas, and force the refineries to work harder to refine more premium gas which will raise prices for everyone else.
