There are delays in the Royal Mail at the moment, due to partly to the strikes (which were never just about money, more about pensions and working conditions *1) and the managers refusing to let people to work overtime to clear the work(the back log has cleared now, it did take 2 weeks though), but also down to almost all the deliveries going out an hour later.

One of main reasons that the deliveries are going out later recently is that the royal mail relies heavily on 7.5tonne lorries to get mail across the country at 70mph, but from Jan 1st 2008 these vehicles need to be limited to 56mph, the royal mail has brought this in 2 months early. This has meant on average the mail has been delayed an hour. (they can not go out on deliveries until all the mail is in, just delivering local mail at the early time would speed up things, but they are not allowed to do that)

Since 2006 the Royal Mail has Post Comm watching down on them, and they are demanding that the Royal Mail cuts costs etc *2, so to do that the Royal Mail needed to cut out some of the things that they were legally not obliged to do, and delivering the Mail on mass first thing in the morning was not one of the things it needed to do and so it has gone. Saturday morning deliveries are also likely to go in the long run for the same reason.

The Royal Mail is in a great deal of flux at the moment, and yes I do agree the mail has slowed down at the moment.

But I also think that the Royal mail should not be run as a business (like it is now) but it should be run as a service to the British people (like it used to be) and this to me is the reason that you (and probably many more people) think they should be renamed as "Royal Fail" well its a better name than Consignia anyway.

There's still a huge back log of mail from the strikes. My dad is a manager for R.M. & he's still having to get his hands dirty & go out delivering like he did when he started many moons ago, lol. It's still a lot slower in general though, you're right.

yeah really slow!

i had a parcel delivered yesterday that was supposed to be delivered last friday!

This is since the strike so maybe they're still playing catch up with all the undelivered mail so maybe it'll improve after christmas!
