because the space is tight. eye contact usually means some other form of contact...and most cultures do not like people in their zone of comfort--for me it's 3 feet, unless it's a female that i'm interested in.

hmm well when you walk past a person and give them eye contact i think we can all agree it's less awkward because the moment is immediately over. In an elevator your left lingering in the awkwardness until someone gets out :P

Well for me, When I see people already in the elevator I give a quick look at them and then after that I don't look at them anymore. Same thing if I'm in the elevator and people coming in, I take a quick look at them and then no more.

I know, isn't that just weird? It's an understanding that when you enter you turn and face the door. Ever enter an elevator and stand there facing everyone else? I once did a psych. paper on this.... hysterical results! Almost all suddenly look up, down, sideways... rarely at me. And no one said a word. Some uttered things I could hear as they left.... but all in all, an awkard moment for all, including me.

For me ,, its space, i dont like it when someone is too close to me when i dont know them.. When an elevator is really crowded i'll wait for the next trip up or down,, rather then to have someone that close to me,, and for god sakes please people take a bath, put on some deod, cuz tight place really hold the smells,, and chicks watch the perfumes cuz some people get headaches from strong stuff!! lol
