If Voldemort can sence when witches and wizards are telling lies - why cant he tell (in Deathly Hallows) - when Narcissa Malfoy tells him that Harry is dead?

Knowing Voldemort to be the most powerful dark wizard in that century, wouldn't he be able to tell that she wasn't being genuine?

He has to be using legilimency, which requires a conscious effort, the same as occlumency. I don't think it would have occurred to him that Narcissa Malfoy would lie about something so integral to "their side".

Also, Voldemort was pretty sure that Harry was dead, because he used the killing curse and it didn't backfire. So it didn't occur to him to use legilimency.

He felt superior to others anyway. That was one of Voldemort's flaws. He wanted to believe that Harry was dead, because that would prove he was better than Harry- the only person who ever thwarted him.

Being excited probably didn't hurt either.

When Narcissa went to check if Harry was dead, Voldemort could not understand that he had already lost Narcissa's loyalty two years ago when he put her son Draco's life at risk by asking him to kill Dumbledore.

Voldemort continued to lose her loyalty every time he threatened the lives and happiness of her family. It was Narcissa's love for her son that caused her to lie to Voldemort.

And it didn't occur to Voldemort to use legilimency on her because he did not understand or respect the power of love. He didn't understand that Narcissa would betray him because he really believed that he was more powerful than her love.

Well, there could be a few answers. First off, and probably the main reason, It doesn't sound like he was using Legimency at the time. And why would he? He has no reason to think that Narcissa would lie about it. Also, even if he had used it, I think that Narcissa would be skilled enough at Occlumency (I'm just assuming, given her lifestyle) to stay blank or have false thoughts. And maybe Voldemort was just too high strung at the moment to concentrate on using Legimency (In which case he wouldn't need Naecissa to check, he could just delve into Harry's thoughts).

Possibilities -

He didn't suspect that she would have lied about it, so he wasn't looking for any signs of insincerity. Legilmency is the ability of one person to read another person or break into their minds, but it seems to require some active force and focus - much like when Snape was using Legilmens on Harry in HP5.

There is also the possibility that Narcissa was an Occulmens, and thus able to at least partially veil her mind from Voldemort.

More than likely though, I expect he just wasn't anticipating falsehood from her so he didn't bother to examine her more thoroughly.

The mind reading is best when face to face, but Narcissa called over her shoulder, and then the Death Eaters cheered so Voldemort had too many distractions to detect the lie.

But he can't! He just thinks he can. Remember, that he said that both when torturing Olivander and Gregorovich, but he was wrong, they told him the truth as they knew it.

Mainly I think he used it for effect and perhaps it worked sometimes.

Remember too, he is suppose to be the "supreme Legimens", but Snape was a double agent for years without exciting Voldemort's suspicions. It is just another instance of Voldemort's self-blindness to reality.

im exceedingly specific he could have... except ofcourse harry destroyed each and all of the horcruxes and then killed voldemort whilst he wasn't paying interest ( like the elder wand the guy slit the elder brother's throat whilst he replaced into drowsing) yet which would be very nearly impossible.. so yah

He can tell when he wants to by using Occlumency. It's not just an act that he can do at all times, it's a form of magic that has to be performed for an outcome.
