I don't know if you meant this is a joke or what, but I really hated it when it was done to me.
I once asked my dad why they did it, and he told me that they were testing to see if I was ready to go in the oven yet.

It's not to benefit the child but is just a social manner of paying attention and showing their affection towards the child.One shouldn't read too much in to such common practices evolved over a period of time.

ugh!!!!! So annoying.... my gramma and my mom used to do that.... gramma did it cuz she thinks its cute, and my mother because she wanted me to have pink cheeks, it looks healthy!!!

They must be aunts also. I have absolutely no idea what possesses them to inflict pain on ones so young. It is quite frightening in addition! - lol.
