I'm afraid i dont have a very philosophical answer to your question- but it just reminded me of the same sort of question posed a different way:

Extremely interesting question.... let me try have a go at it.

Mathematics is abstract dealing (without physical handling) with quantities in order to arrive at generalized qualitative conclusions regarding their mutual relativities and interplay. Mathematics thus leads to a quality understanding and appreciation of quantity or numbers so that results of their interactions can be known without resorting to real experience of physically dealing with them.

to the ancient Greeks, math implied logic
so
philosophy and mathematics are inherently "first cousins"; that is, they are in the same family of thought processes.
math creates a set of rules for quantifying reality;
philosophy [would] create a set of rules for qualifying reality...

both set a prori assumptions about reality...both attempt to explain, project, predict based on their assumptions...both are seen as valid or invalid if their formulae accurately reflects reality and if their assumptions-taken as a whole-are internally consistent
